News from Sacramento

Equality California, California’s LGBT civil rights and advocacy organization, saw their entire 2007 legislative package clear the first major hurdle in the Legislature.  EQCA sponsored nine measures.  All passed either the State Assembly or the Senate by the June 8th deadline.  "By passing allnine bills, the Assembly and the Senate are standing up for fairness and equality under the law for the LGBT community and all Californians," said EQCA Executive Director Geoff Kors.  "The number of proactive LGBT rights billspassed this year is monumental and demonstrates the political gains we have made in California over the last several years." AB43, the Religious Freedom and Civil Marriage Protection Act authored by Assembly member Mark Leno, D-San Francisco passed  with a 42-34 vote and once again affirmed that same-sex couples should be able to marry.  The remaining bills will help protect youth in public schools and juvenile justice facilities, provide same-sex couples and domestic partners with the same rights, benefits and protections afforded other loving and committed couples and support all communities by fighting discrimination and bias. "These successes have set the tone for a successful year legislatively for LGBT Californians," (Kors).  So keep the momentum going!  Check out EQCA's 2007 Legislation Guides for a list and explanation of this year's sponsored bills.  Follow up with your state representative and senator.  Write, call, email them.  Click here for more information about your representatives and how to be heard.

Gay Day in South Bay is Back!

The 4th Annual Gay Day in South Bay at Heritage Park in Otay Ranch is being held Sunday, August 19th from 12 - 3 pm. Join other LGBT people and their allies and friends for a beautiful day at the park, socializing and networking. We will have food, entertainment activities for kids - just come and relax and meet your neighbors! If you are a business owner or social agency please contact us to reserve a table for only $100 for profit business or $75 for a non-profit. Deadline to secure a table is Sunday, August 5th. Please contact Marci Bair if you are interested.
Gay Day in South Bay was started by Marci Bair five years ago to bring together the LGBT and Supportive Businesses and residents in the South Bay. The South Bay is an extremely rapidly growing part of the county and there are many LGBT folks that want to connect with each other but don't know how. This is your chance to get to know your neighbors and learn about the diverse business community that we have in the South Bay and support the local businesses in your own neighborhood.

at Petco Park, 5:05 - the San Diego Padres take on the Atlanta Braves at PETCO Park. Take this opportunity to celebrate LGBT Pride while enjoying a night of fun, baseball, and recognition for the San Diego LGBT community.
San Diego Pride supporters and volunteers will be recognized as well as the Gay Men's Chorus of San Diego who will sing the National Anthem. San Diego Pride is offering discounted tickets at $16.
